EDUCATION FUNDING

While the Economic Recovery and Stimulus Act is providing $234 million in federal funds for Nebraska public schools, it is important that $61 million in State General Fund dollars be appropriated to meet the $295 million our schools need under Nebraska's State Aid Needs-Based formula. The $61 million now needed is less than the $100 million originally recommended by the Governor and Appropriations Committee.

We must continue to educate students and prepare for the future, regardless of economic crisis. The funding that schools in Nebraska will receive from the economic recovery law will go a long way to help shield our students and schools from the troubled economy.  It means fewer overcrowded classrooms, more schools that are equipped to prepare our students for tomorrow's jobs and more Pell Grants for deserving college students. It means our dedicated educators can continue to inspire and teach young minds.
